Genesis of the IMS FormationThe credit of laying the Foundation of The Indian Mathematical Society goes to Mr. V. Ramaswami Aiyar(August 4, - January 22,). Around the Christmas of , he wrote a letter to some friends interested in mathematics mentioning the lack of facilities for mathematical periodicals and books and hence proposed to form of a small Mathematical Society which may be called 'Analytic Club'.

Thereafter getting support from 19 other persons, he wrote a letter dated 3rd April for newspapers where he announced the formation of the Society under the name 'Indian Mathematical Club'. The letterwas published in the leading Madras dailies of the 4th April, ; and it is but fitting that it is on record in the pages of the J.
