Born on January 1, 1891, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Bickford was the fifth of seven children in a working-class family. From an early age, he displayed a rebellious and adventurous spirit, which led him to various careers before entering acting.

He initially studied engineering at MIT but left to pursue a variety of jobs, including lumberjack, coal miner, and boxer.

Bickford’s entry into acting was somewhat accidental. After working in the vaudeville circuit, he joined a touring theatrical company, and his natural talent quickly became apparent.
